Dez was making breakfast the following day when Sully showed up. Dez’s wife, Eva, had already left for her shift with the Kimotan Rapids Police Department and their daughter, Kayleigh, was walking to school with a friend who lived nearby. It left Sully to play with their dog, Pax, while Dez finished putting together his meal.

“Making an omelette,” Dez told Sully. “Want one?”

Sully glanced up from the floor where he was wrestling with Pax, a massive black, long-haired dog of mixed breed. Dez had never figured out what breeds, and he supposed it didn’t matter.

Pax had come into their lives in a roundabout way, he and Sully basically having rescued each other a number of years back. While Pax lived with Dez’s family now, he remained just as much Sully’s dog.

“Sure,” Sully said. “What do you have for fillings?”

Dez ran through the options, eating his while getting Sully’s ready. “Did you mention any of what we’re working on to Sarah?”

Sarah, Sully’s fiancée. “No, and she didn’t ask. We have an agreement—don’t ask, don’t tell. Not that I don’t trust her, but she knows when I don’t talk about cases, there’s a reason.”

Since Sarah worked as a reporter at the city’s largest newspaper, Dez figured the two of them had come up with a sensible way to keep their jobs from coming between them.

“I didn’t mention much to Eva either,” Dez said. “Ordinarily, I tell her a lot, but given she works in the fraud section, I didn’t want to put her in a bad spot. Lachlan’s investigation already had the potential for winding up on Eva’s unit’s table.”

“Good point,” Sully said. “Did Lachlan say anything more about how he wants to tackle this?”

As Dez chewed on a bite, he flipped the egg in the frying pan. “Nope. Knowing him, he won’t bother sharing until we’re right outside whatever door he’s planning on knocking on.”

Dez and Sully had just enough time to scarf down breakfast and one cup of coffee each when Lachlan called.

“Was up half the night strategizing,” Lachlan said once Dez put him on speaker. “Meet me downtown in an hour. I’ll text you the address.”

“Old Downtown or new one?” Dez asked.

“New one. Despite Barton Winch’s past involvement in the Old Downtown Business Improvement District, he’s long since moved on to greener pastures. Oh, and Dez? Doesn’t matter about Sully, but I want you here in slacks and a button-down.”

Dez raised his brows though Lachlan wasn’t there to see. “Why?”

“I’ll fill you in when you get here.” With that, Lachlan disconnected.

Dez glared at his phone before turning worried eyes on Sully. “What the hell’s he up to?”

Sully shrugged. “No idea. Experience tells me I’d rather not find out.”
